Choosing an STI test and sample type

The right sample depends on the infection and the type of exposure.

Different tests use different samplesDepending on the infection and test, a healthcare professional may recommend urine, a vaginal swab, blood, or a throat or rectal swab. The correct sites depend on your exposures, anatomy, symptoms and individual situation. A urine test alone does not automatically assess every exposure site.Check that a home-collection kit is intended for the sample and test you need, and follow all collection and shipping instructions. Availability and clinical or regulatory status differ by country and product.Source: CDC, Getting Tested for STIs.
A note about testing

At-home tests differ in their sample, detection window and laboratory requirements. A negative result may not rule out an infection. Speak with a qualified healthcare professional.
